Yet another snow day + cookies

I know everyone must be getting tired of seeing yet more photos of snow here. It's such an unusual spring, though, and all the more so for us since we hadn't experienced snow in so long anyway. Yesterday was another all-day affair, and today schools are canceled again - as well as the library story hour we were planning to go to. So as usual, everyone got all bundled up and went outside after breakfast - Ramont to push snow and the rest of us to pretend like we were working.

Jonathan was so sad that this tractor was too small for him to ride along.

But mowing snow is almost as fun.

Our yard on April 19, 2013. Seriously.

And because our romping around outside has been so severely curtailed we've, unfortunately, been spending more time doing this - watching videos of ourselves and Tractor Tom (10 minute youtube videos).

I also made cookies this morning. Snacks are a major part of our day. And while I wish we would eat only kale chips and bean sprouts, the truth is that we all really like cookies. I figure that if we keep brushing the kids' teeth regularly and set them loose to "exercise" as they naturally (over)do, they'll be ok (or at least bump up to the 10th percentile for their age weight at some point).

Several months ago I found the perfect cookie recipe and have been making pretty much only these since then (poor Ramont). Here is my recipe, loosely adapted from a Taste of Home magazine.

CHEWY GOOD OATMEAL COOKIES

3/4 cup butter, soft
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 T honey (not sure why)
2 t vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups quick oats
1 1/2 cups flour (with about 1/4 cup of that being ground flax seed or wheat germ)
1 t baking powder or soda
1/2 t ground cinnamon
handful sunflower seeds or sesame seeds
handful dried cranberries
handful white or chocolate chips

Mix and drop by spoonfuls onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes. Remove directly onto counter to cool. Yields about 4 1/2 dozen Harder Schrock size cookies (tiny, so that I don't feel so bad if we eat four - or six - a day).
