Winter work

Two weeks ago I wrapped up my winter "job." Without divulging too many details, it involved talking on the phone with Low German Mennonites in Kansas - something I love to do (not the phone part, but still).

Back in another life, before I met Ramont or went to Bolivia to work with Old Colony Mennonites there, I worked as a health promoter among these folks in Kansas. I really loved that job, as it involved lots of conversations with women about fascinating topics (views of health was one of my favorites) and also medical translating along with the social worky aspect of helping navigate systems.

I led some regular group events (which were quite fun), as well as made lots of home visits. Though I couldn't have imagined it at the time, it was superb training for our MCC assignment in Bolivia.

So this winter I got to revisit that world, though from our guest room in Minnesota via a cell phone. Definitely second-rate, but not a bad way to pick up a few extra dollars at my own leisure!

Liz...I'm passing through your blog tonight and enjoying it as always. This sounds so interesting and I suspect there are a good many ties to this work and the work that I do. Really cool to see how you and your siblings have found ways to contribute so well with Low German. Truly a special gift that your parents gave you.
